Sentiments From Around the Industry
Since Andy's passing on October 24, 2005, letters, emails, cards and messages have poured into Metro's offices.
The following is a sampling of the kind words and personal sentiments that we received in response to the email sent
on the day of his passing by Andy's daughter Debra Shapiro Weiss, Metro's Executive Vice President.
It is with the most heartfelt sincerity that we thank each and every one of you for your immeasurable love and support.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some stay for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same.
Flavia, American contemporary writer; Quote read at funeral.

...You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. I entered the newspaper business in the late 80s going to work for John Cash here in Greeneville. One of the first things he did was take me to a Mid-Atlantic NAME conference, where I met your Dad. I will always remember your Dad as one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met. There was never any pretense -- just Andy. He was one of the people who made me think I could be successful in this business and influenced my decision to stay with it. A decision for which I will always be grateful. Its not often we get to meet someone like your Dad in this life. I was truly blessed to have met, and call your Dad a friend.
Artie Wehenkel, Advertising Director, The Greenville Sun, Greenville, TN
...I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was a great guy who will be missed greatly in the newspaper industry. Your writing about you father in regards to his honestly and hard work in the newspaper industry couldnt be more on point. I always found your dad to represent himself and his company with great dignity. Andy always knew how to have fun in our annual Indiana Newspaper Executive meetings. He was a great asset to those meetings and was a true friend to newspapers big and small.
Cory Bollinger, Advertising Director, Herald-Times, Bloomington, IN
I only had the pleasure of knowing Andy as a businessman, but I am grateful nonetheless. Andy always dealt with me and members of my company with the greatest level of professionalism, respect and integrity. He always thought about the customer, and whether a certain action was right or wrong, as much as he did the bottom line. The same can be said for the people he hired -- which says even more about him. There never seems to be enough good people like Andy in the business world that you can look up to. Ill miss him terribly.
C. Lee Smith, President, Sales Development Services, Admall, Columbus, OH
I cant tell you how sad I was to see the news about Andys passing in the Iowa Press Bulletin. He will be missed by everyone in our industry. Thinking back over all the years that I would see him at the conventions and the wonderful conversations we would have reminds us that he was a true leader in his field. He was one of the very few people who could see the exciting things that computers were going to bring to our industry long before it really happened. We talked about moving art on disk and by phone years before it came to pass. Andys passing will leave a void in many peoples lives and nothing will ever fill that void. It will just become a place we can go when we need some happy memories.
Mike Lyon, Publisher, Mapleton Press, Mapleton, IA
...I had the opportunity to meet Andy at several of the Illinois Press Association conventions. He was a man of honesty, kindness and compassion. His love and his beliefs will continue.
Roberta Kempen, Advertising Director, Twin States Publishing, Watseka, IL
We are sorry to hear of your Dads passing and the pain it must have brought to visit your heart, and those of your family and close friends. Cancer is an epidemic and has spread its arms around the world without our permission, only our trail of grief. Your fathers good work will be his legacy to much of the art and printing industry world.
Glory Wilkinson, Surrey Leader, Surrey, BC, Canada
Many of us had met Andy, and all who did thought what a really nice person he was. We are so sorry for your loss and we know it is a huge one. Our prayers are with you.
Lynn Duval, Free Community Papers of New England
I was sadden to hear that Andy passed away. I do not have the history with Andy that many people in our industry have had but I do feel the loss just the same. He was a very gentle person who has contributed a lot to the world during his time on earth. One did not have to know him well to form a fondness for him. ...

...My sincere condolences on the passing of your father. Though I didnt know him very well, he certainly impressed me as a wonderful individual, a kind, gentle man who enjoyed and cared about his work. He helped judge (and photograph) the NENAEA Ad Awards the last four years, of which we were the host newspaper. This past August, knowing how sick he was, I told Jennifer Steiner that we could get a replacement. She responded by saying that he wanted to do it again, that he looked forward to it. Even though he took short rests, he never lost the enthusiasm.
There s no doubt in my mind that one of the main reasons Metro is such a fine company is because of your dad. May he rest in peace.
Ray Roy, VP Advertising, Record-Journal, Meriden, CT
Your Dad was a VERY special person, not only in the newspaper industry but also to me. He was my friend, not just an acquaintance, but someone I could always count on to be there if needed. ...How proud he was of his family, especially those grandbabies. I loved him like a brother and sought his advice like a father. I thank God that I was able to spend what time I had with him.
Bob Taylor, Former Advertising Director, Jacksonville Daily News, Jacksonville, NC
I met Andy when, as a kid, I used to attend the summer INAME conventions with my folks. Just recently having learned that Andy was only 63, little did I know how young he was at the time of those summer gatherings. What I will always remember about Andy was his poise, his professionalism, his seemingly uncanny ability to remember names, and his commitment to our industry.
Dan E. Rumbach, Co-Publisher, The Herald, Jasper, IN
I met your dad at a Minneapolis restaurant when my daughter was only able to crawl. We got to know each other because he enjoyed her visiting his [tradeshow] table ... he noted having a daughter of his own. He never missed saying my name and having a short visit over the next 15-20 years. He was a very nice and kind friend ... Ill miss him too.
Dan Debettignies, Iowa Telecom, Des Moines, IA
You have my deepest sympathies. Your father was a business partner and also a friend for many years. Our industry has been very fortunate to have a man like your father associated with us.

...He was a good man. I always enjoyed speaking with him at the shows. He will be missed by many.
Joe Nicastro, General Manager, The Weekly, Budd Lake, NJ
It is with sadness that we learned of Andys passing. He was a wonderful man whom we have had the pleasure of knowing over the years. His passion and enthusiasm for Metro Creative Graphics has been instrumental in increasing the quality of community newspapers across North America.
Anne Lannan, Ontario Community Newspapers Association
Andy was a wonderful friend to the newspaper business and all of us who work in it.
Greg Cox, Advertising Art Manager, St. Petersburg Times, St. Petersburg, FL
...Your words are true and all of us who had the opportunity of working on a project with him can appreciate your thoughts. ...He was a dedicated and kind person and we will miss him.
Bob Cardosa, VP/Adv. Director, Sun Publishing Company Newspapers, Westerly, RI
It was an honor to have known your father.
Danny Dean, Advertising Director, The Covington Leader, Covington, TN
Andy was one of the first people I met when I started in the advertising field 27 years ago. He was perhaps one of my greatest influences on how to professionally design ads. ...He was truly an inspiration to me and everyone in the newspaper industry. I will always treasure the good times we shared, the memories, and value the knowledge I gained from him.
