The Andrew E. Shapiro Cancer (AESC) Foundation was established in honor of Andrew E. (Andy) Shapiro, Chairman of Metro Creative Graphics, Inc., who spent more than 40 years working with newspapers to help them build revenue and lost his two-year battle with non-smoking-related lung cancer in October 2005.
The Foundation's mission grew out of Andy Shapiro's belief in the power of newspapers and free papers, which are at the heart of every community. He understood that they are in a unique position to bring together the activities of national and local cancer-related businesses and organizations. By working together with local papers, these partnerships can help build a more cohesive and productive approach to educating people in all areas about cancers, preventative measures and pre-screening options. This equates to hope and the ability for publications to raise awareness and money for the fight against cancer. AESC was established to provide guidance, support materials and a networking mechanism to these partnerships and the projects they undertake. |

Andy Shapiro's name and national recognition within the industry provides the conduit to unite the local influence and power of the press to garner the greatest possible awareness, education and fundraising for cancer throughout North America. Efforts will be coordinated with individuals and organizations interested in the foundation's activities as well as programs involving various members of the newspaper/free paper industry, including associations, groups, vendors, holding companies and individual papers.
To this end, the Foundation has launched a special initiative Newspapers Fighting Cancer (NFC) / Free Papers Fighting Cancer (FPFC). The NFC/FPFC brings together papers from across North America dailies, weeklies, shoppers (both paid- and free-circulation publications) to promote cancer awareness and raise money to fight the many forms of the disease through outreach to the continent's millions of readers and advertisers. The AESC Foundation Web site acts as the networking tool for papers to find and share outreach and fundraising ideas and success stories. |
